“History has remembered the kings & warriors, because they destroyed; art has remembered the people, because they created.”
~William Morris
In school we all learn about the leaders & the soldiers who have profoundly affected world & national events. Art is taught as a subject of its own, an “elective,” a less that necessary part of education. The students who study it are seen as a group separate from the mainstream.
Yet the arts & popular culture, & especially cinema, are a reflection of the world in which we all live- the science kids, the artsy-fartsy kids, the ones with special needs. Under the same sun, ruled by the same leaders & tossed about by the same storms, the art of popular culture reflects humanity’s stories-both the grim & the joyous. The effects of the popular culture of the early 1900’s was notably profound because the harnessing of electricity opened up a worldwide audience.
Art, being viewed by the many, has acted as an agent of change, both elevating & degrading our culture. It has influenced & defined popular opinion & has even been employed as a medium for propaganda, altering not just our culture, but the actual course of history.

THE CRAFTSMAN Volume One
OCTOBER 1901—MARCH 1902
“Though the name of William Morris has long since become a household word throughout America, yet the personality of the man, as well as his great part in the world’s work, is definitely known but to the few. His was a versatile genius…”
The father of the Arts & Crafts Movement, Morris was an undisputed genius whose mastery of textile & furniture design, poetry, illustration & writing changed the world of art & architecture in his native England & here in America.
These videos of William Morris are the work of scholars due to the fact that his influence on art & architecture, & on the cultures of England & America has been profound & lasting. His life, his marriage, his homes have been carefully examined because he was a man of such depth, talent & vitality that he changed the way that the world looked at design, labor & humanity.

Lesser know than many of his contemporaries, & viewed as being too eccentric for the commercial market of his time Rohlf’s designs do not fit into any one category. His inspiration came from many sources, including Japan, China, the Middle East & Medieval & Renaissance Europe. He was visibly influenced by the Aesthetic style the Arts & Crafts Movement, Art Nouveau & is considered to be a proto-modernist, a style of the period approaching modernism which appeared at the beginning of the nineteenth century, and filtered through the century into Modernism.
Over the period of barely a decade, Rohlfs designed only a few hundred works—many of them for his own home. I have viewed his pieces at The Museum of Arts & Crafts in St. Petersburg, Florida & every time I visit I am enthralled by his genius.
He may be unfamiliar to you & I urge you to learn a great deal more about him by watching these videos.
