I hang out on many old house group boards & read many stories of homebuyers whose inspections failed to find & report major issues. Most of the time, the homebuyer didn’t really know what things an inspection is designed to find, or, how to ensure that they receive best, most informative one.
Home inspections on old houses have some similarities with inspections on newer houses, but there are definitely some areas of concern that are not found in new homes. An inspector with experience in both will understand & appreciate these differences. He especially needs to be aware of what factors that can be present that will destroy a house & with it, your peace of mind & your bank account.
In these videos several inspectors explain the basic purpose & process & then there are a couple that address common issues to which great attention should be paid because they are unsafe, expensive to repair or both.

Though this image is of one we lost, he preservation advocacy groups in Southern California have been very effective in educating & influencing both the public & government bodies despite the financial & political challenges.
Echo Park Lake was originally a reservoir for drinking water. The surrounding park was first landscaped in 1892, & by the 1920s the building boom had brought new homes & community centers to the area.
They offer restoration tips, hands-on workshops & advice on historic tax credits.
The leading preservation advocacy group in Southern California, the Conservancy works throughout L.A. County- 88 cities plus the County’s unincorporated areas.
Their focus on raising awareness of historic places has resulted in great success in stopping their destruction through strong preservation laws & incentives.
Monrovia, incorporated In 1887 is one of the oldest towns in the San Gabriel Valley, in Los Angeles County. With a charming old downtown Monrovia boast 2 historic districts which protect its stock of homes which are primarily bungalows.
The group’s activities include walking tours of downtown Monrovia & includes a history of the downtown area as well as the history of Monrovia itself.
BHNA is a crackerjack, non-profit organization of volunteers dedicated to the preservation of the homes in its district. Its signature hour tour, only one of the group’s many activities, is a finely-tuned & well-oiled machine, introducing hundreds of people to the charm of bungalows every year.
The second largest preservation organization in the state, Pasadena Heritage has done an outstanding job of protecting this beautiful city’s cultural resources.
Their tours are enchanting & informative as are their educational events.
SAN DIEGO
Save Our Heritage Organization
SOHO, a highly effective, countywide historic preservation organization, was formed in 1969 to save a single home, the 1887 Sherman Gilbert House.
Working both proactively & in response to specific threats to historic cultural & architectural resources. SOHO promotes strong preservation laws & incentives, as well as education through tours & events & the supporting of museums.

There are many historic preservation groups in Florida fighting to save their built cultural environment. For decades, the state has been famous for its shady land grabs. Now that there’s less land to grab, in their reckless enthusiasm, developers target old neighborhoods, bifurcating & polluting them with highways paid for by our tax dollars. They destroy their homes & vintage commercial buildings to erect chain stores & restaurants, or purchase them as rentals & allow them to rot.
Fortunately, the preservation advocacy groups in Florida provide the old buildings with a voice & some of their words are being heard. Add yours. Some of the most wonderful friendships I ever had were made participating in these groups.
STATEWIDE
Florida Trust for Historic Preservation
As the leading preservation advocacy group in Florida, the Trust promotes the preservation of the architectural, historical & archaeological heritage of the state, focusing on four areas: Advocacy, Education and Stewardship.
As advocates, they collaborate with other non-profits & government agencies at all levels to influence policy decisions & encourage funding that protect Florida’s history & heritage.
As educators, they promote heritage tours, participate in Main Street events & host a variety of workshops to teach best preservation practices.
As stewards, they have restored the Hays-Hood House, a Queen Anne Victorian in the Magnolia Heights National Register District in Tallahassee for use as their headquarters.

I have included 2 sets of videos on beauty & fashion in the early 1900’s because each presenter tells the stories in her own unique manner. Although I was somehow born (in 1949) having great familiarity with what people wore in the 1910’s through the 30’s, I was quite entertained by both of these women & consider myself to be more educated for having watched their videos.
Let me warn you that after watching these videos, you will have much less tolerance for Hollywood’s rendition of these periods. I find it terribly distracting to watch films in which the fashion & beauty are shown so inaccurately.
When the film, The Music Man was released in 1962, I was annoyed by their inaccurate portrayal of life in 1912. After years of studying family photos it made me very uncomfortable. I was 13 years old but I knew a bad fake when I saw one! Years later & further submersion in all things historic have not made me any more forgiving! C’mon Hollywood. You can do better!
LET’S LEARN ABOUT BEAUTY & FASHION IN THE EARLY 1900’s

After the 3 ULTIMATES play, another set of 3, beginning with Fashion History:1900-1920 (14:28) by the second presenter, Zoe Hong will follow. These 3 take a more teacherly look at fashion history. The videos in the same set, about the next 2 decades will play automatically.

My mother (born in 1919) & I had great times watching Turner Classics, Antiques Roadshow & driving through historic neighborhoods. She marcelled my hair when I was 5 & drew Clara Bow lips with red lipstick on my little mouth. What fun we would have had watching these videos (See the complete Menu here.) about beauty & fashion in the early 1900’s! Miss you, Mama.

“The only question left to be settled now is: Are women persons? And I hardly believe any of our opponents will have the hardihood to say they are not.”
~Susan B. Anthony, leader in the United states Women’s Suffrage Movent
My mama raised me right. Even lacking such a great resource as videos of the Woman’s Suffrage Moment, she taught me about our struggle for the right to vote when I was very small. Well before I went to school, Susan B. Anthony, champion of temperance, abolition, labor rights & equal pay for equal work was a familiar hero to me & even as a child, I was impassioned by her work.
When I get my time machine, I’m going to whiz back to 1910 & introduce myself to Grace Hare, the chatelaine of the Hare House which she generously shared with me almost 100 years later. I am so interested to know her opinions on so many issues of the day, but most importantly, women’s suffrage. She & her sisters were active in their local Women’s Club, raising funds to build the clubhouse, & these groups were very influential in the Movement. But, what were her own, personal thoughts on the matter?
